The When You’re Ready Project is a community. It is our mission to provide a platform for survivors to share their stories and connect with one another. When I started the site, I wasn’t sure where it would go. I thought perhaps it would become a data-related project, but soon realized it was meant to be a place where people can come to be reminded we are not alone.

As you may know, I personally respond to each Story where an email address is provided. That is how I connected with Elizabeth, Lindsay and Heather. Each of these women found the experience of sharing her story to be an important step toward healing, each of them felt they had more to say. When You’re Ready was a perfect platform, and it was an easy decision to feature their writing on the WYR Blog.

We would be honoured to feature your posts – either anonymously or attributed – about life as a survivor. Perhaps you would like to talk about what it was like after your shared your story, some of the things you still struggle with, or things that have helped you heal. Maybe you are sad, maybe you are angry – this is a place you can vent or ask for help.

A few guidelines:

  • The primary goal of the WYR project is to build a community for survivors of rape and sexual violence, a safe place for women and men to share their stories.
  • Members can choose to reveal their identity or not. Like all aspects of WYR, gives users 100% control over their personal information, with the right to share as much or as little as they’re comfortable, and to withdraw their consent at any time.
  • WYR welcomes diverse points of view. Please ensure that any content is inclusive and respectful toward everyone. It is okay to express anger, I think we have all been angry at some point. But content resembling hate speech, or that targets any group is not allowed. Often, our experiences were violent, ugly, obscene and horrible. We need to be able to talk about these things, and so graphic details will not be censored.
  • Use this as an opportunity to share your story with other survivors – not to name your rapist/attacker. WYR will not publish names or identifying details of anyone except for you, and then only with your permission.
